Green Map - Icons V3 update - Historical News!

With new understanding of sustainability and diversity, and hundreds of new people and communities involved in Green Mapmaking since our 1999 update to version 2, it's time to update the Green Map Icons.

The process began in December 2002, where 22 Mapmakers from 14 countries began the discussion.

Over the next 2.5 years:

GMS circulated and developed the Proposed Icon list, collected the local icons, and Icon use was researched in Hiroshima Japan and Cambridge US.

GMS developed and submitted funding proposals for the Icon set’s final design, font, posters in both printed and digital formats, updated definitions, materials and PR. By the time the global discussion process is completed in December 2005, we hope to announce that a grant has been secured.

In Summer 2005:

Mapmaker Ciprian Samoila arrives in NYC from Romania, volunteering to put his website programming skills to work on the Icon Update website. Think Global is the project's motto.

In NYC at Green Map's global office, a planning meeting with Mapmakers from US, Israel, Romania, Colombia and Japan helped set the process in motion.

Staff member Aika Nakashima became the Update Coordinator, and conferring with Green Map Japan’s Misako Yomosa and Shoichiro Sendai, made plans for Asian Mapmakers meeting in August, in parallel with public Green Map events at the world's fair in central Japan, the Aichi EXPO 2005.

Near the EXPO, 18 Mapmakers from Japan, Taiwan, India and Indonesia discussed the process in Japanese and English after an overview by Sendai-san, Aika and Wendy. They confirmed the process and schedule, offering great advice for this historic undertaking.

23 Taiwanese Mapmakers held the very first Icon Updating "local meeting" before departing Japan. Their feedback confirms the process works.

With Cip back at home, working on the website, other elements were prepared in NYC for an October process launch.
