About Green Map's Icon Updating Process

Green Map Icons are the symbols that make our maps unique and special. This shared visual language allows Green Mapmakers worldwide to promote and connect local ecological and cultural resources while empowering the people who care for them. Originally created in 1995-96, the global symbols were updated in 1999. Today, all registered Mapmakers use the 125 globally designed set, Version 2 of the Green Map® Icons, as further described here.

Every local community and its environment are different, but we all use the Icons to connect diverse local resources to a global audience. Green Map Icons are the gateway to our unique, shared vision of sustainability and community well-being. Designed as an evolving language that reflects and communicates our growing understanding the changing environment, in the six years since Version 2 was created, we have tripled the size of our network and expanded to a diversity of cultures in 45 countries. It's time to rethink, update and improve the Icons, the heart of our global sustainability program together.
